The Roads Department of Limerick City Council works closely with the National Roads Authority and the Department of Transport who have the overall responsibility for the national road network and the non-national road network respectively. The Roads Department provides for the maintenance and improvement of national and non-national roads.
National Roads
Limerick City Council in association with Clare County Council and Limerick County Council (the lead authority) are working closely with the National Roads Authority in the development of a Southern Ring Road for Limerick including a new downstream crossing of the Shannon River. It is expected that this scheme will be operational by 2009.
Non-national Roads
Phase 2 of the City Centre Strategy is currently underway. This will lead to enhanced street-scapes by way of public lighting, improved footpath surfaces, carriageways and increased pedestrian priority areas in the city.
